Luna River, Tasmania

This is a fossil fern tree seen in cross section. Surrounding the dark central pith of the plant, seen in the upper left hand corner, is a collar of true wood or xylem. This is surrounded, in turn, by an area of circular leaf bases, each with its horseshoe shaped vein. Finally, filling the periphery are smaller circular rootlets that make up the outside of the plant.
